A mutialtion of a classic, but still worth owning.
I love Wallace Wood and his King of the world, and have waited for years for a new edition of this work. I already had an American original and one in Danish translation from the seventies, but I wanted to see it in a new print edition. Mostly this book is allright, but they have violated it, by giving Wood's (many) naked lovely nymphets clothes on. Wood was the dirty old man of comics, and if that is a for problem for some they should not read it. It is unforgivable to change the art work to please the prudes. It is ALWAYS a violation to change a piece of art, no matter how uncomfortable it makes you feel. Right now there is campaign from the PC dimwits to censur literature and comics which could "corrupt the young and innocent". Examples are Huckleberry Finn, Anne frank, Pippi Longstockings, and Japanes Manga. I thought we progressed past this point decades ago. Whatever their motives for trying to ban or alter art, the peole who do so are essentially repeating the mistakes from history instead of learning from it.Anyway. Wood is a master illustrator, if a bit inconsistent, and this is vintage Wood. Unfortunately his follow up piece to this story "Odkin son of Odkin" showed an artist in rapid decline.Wood has a great amigination, and this story is both creepy, funny, and naughty at the same time. Wood's trademark is his lovely, slightly chubby, young women, and there are plenty of those in here. There is also a very humoristic, dark pholosophical tone to this book, and it is, to me at least, one of the greatest work of fantasy. It is a shame they couldn't just re-release it without mutilating it.
