Q: Are these "virtual surround" headphones where there is one driver per ear or "true surround" where there are multiple drivers for each ear?

I have a pair of these and believe they are 5.1 driver headphones. The 9.1 surround is a matrix effect.

Q: Originally imported the Japanese version but experienced audio drops regularly so sent them back. Anyone experienced this with the UK version?

I have the UK version. Absolutely no issues with Audio drop outs.

Q: Will these phone decode the DTS soundtrack directly from the digital/optical link via a blu-ray player, or do I have to switch to analogue with BD?

I haven't tried the optical input as I don't need it for my setup. I'm feeding a Blu-ray player HDMI out to one of the HDMI inputs on the headphone base station and it decodes all the popular multichannel surround sound formats like DD, DTS, Dolby True HD, DTS-HD etc. In order to get your full surround sound out though, you need to make sure that the 'TV+HP Audio Out' option in the onscreen headphone menu is set to OFF otherwise you will get a down mixed LPCM two channel output to the headphones.

Q: Have any of you used this 9.1 Sony headset for PC gaming (preferably) and/or console gaming? If so, what are your thoughts on the surround simulation?

Hiya I picked a set of these up recently and was blown away. I use mind for both pc gaming and for movies on my projector. Not sure I can hear 9.1 though but what I can hear is soo good. You definitely won't be disappointed.
