Q: can i use this without unfolding the "wings"?

I'm sure you can just as I am sure that it won't work as well and you'll just be wasting your money. Use it as directed or buy a kia.

maybe you were connected on a wifi DFS channel. those DFS channels can automatically switch, even disable, when radar is detected. unfortunately, the 4800 Mbps and 2400 Mbps speed modes are tied to DFS channels. on a similar NightHawk model I have, (RAX70) you can sort of check your channels and bandwidth. it's viewable NOT in the wifi setup page where you'd expect it, but INSTEAD on the "Advanced Home" page when you scroll down. right now mine shows for example: Channel 116(P)+120+124+128 Mode Up to 4803 Mbps (160MHz) and frustratingly, Windows shows the actual Link Speed is only 1200/1200 Mbps despite the NightHawk claiming it's presently operating "up to 4803 Mbps" -------------------------- if Netgear would simply document these limitations truthfully they probably wouldn't get so many RMAs
