Robust and reliable, beautiful design and fantastic value
The design is magnificent. One of the best I have seen for an external DVD drive. So many I have previously bought have been too flimsy and weak, which eventually led to problems. But this drive is very robust and sturdy and will survive being dropped on the floor. It's also neatly compact with a cable of the right length that can be tidily tucked away into the underside of the drive. The drive is visually very appealing with the black hexagonal finish on the top and the white line running around the sides. I have not had any problems so far. It plays all my DVDs and CDs without any problem and doesn't make too much noise either, which is great. I am also able to burn CD-RWs with ease. Overall I'm really glad I made this purchase - fantastic value, beautiful design and works perfectly.

Great movie and audio playing drive for the price of a couple of films
Only bought this as a DVD playing device, so can't comment on the use of it as a backup device. But as a movie player it's been faultless. True plug and play, and using the highly flexible and robust free VLC Media Player software (Windows no longer comes with any native player), allows any disc to be played regardless of region. Add in near silent operation, slimline design, USB-A and C connection options, pretty robust construction and a high level of disc format compatibility, and you've got a surefire winner, especially for the money. The only caveat (as noted by other purchasers) is the short connecting cable, but that seems pretty standard for devices of this type at this end of the market. And an extender is cheap - order one up when you buy if that's an issue.

Great piece of kit, great price!
Having an extensive collection of family photos I wanted to archive, a library of music cds that I wanted to copy, and a newly replaced laptop with no cd drive (who ever though that was a good idea?!) I was pleased to find a cheap piece of kit that promised to solve my dilemma. At under £20, it did seem a bit too good to be true but I figured it was worth the risk. And how right I was! On opening the box I found a sturdy looking compact little drive but seemingly no cables, but on flipping it over discovered the nifty slot in the base where the attached cables tuck neatly away - added bonus, it means the drive actually fits back easily into the original packaging when not in use, a rarity for electronics! There are USB and Type C connectors (you only need to connect one, it just means you have options) and it draws power from the computer so no separate power lead is required. Within seconds of connecting it to a laptop it is ready to use, no drivers to install, no messing with complicated instructions, just plug in and away you go. A simple push button opens the drive and then operation is no different than having an inbuilt drive. I didn't write a review straight away despite email reminders to do so as I wanted to put it through its paces first, but a few weeks and a couple of hundred copied cds later I'm happy to say I have no regrets with this purchase. It does exactly what I need and at a very decent price. Hopefully I won't need it, but there is also a 1 year guarantee should any issues arise. I've rated it 4 stars instead of 5 for one reason only - the length of the cable is a bit on the short side. I don't have the neatest of workspaces so at first found it a bit of a juggle when the drive has to be sat almost immediately next to my laptop, but it is a minor inconvenience. Overall, a great bit of kit at a very reasonable price that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Sturdy, efficient and stylish external disc drive
I have a Dell Inspiron 3650 Desktop, and I run Linux Mint 18.3. The built-in disc drive failed, it seems that the ribbon cable connecting the read mechanism to the output at the rear has become pinched as the drive has been used, resulting in failure. The computer is out of guarantee, so I looked for an external drive on Amazon. Based on the reviews already here, I chose this unit. Firstly, it arrived the following day despite choosing free delivery (cheapskate) which was excellent. First impressions; Sturdy unit, as described by other purchasers. Stylish design, exactly as shown in the illustration on Amazon. I don't really like modern disc drives as they are like what I used to call laptop drives, quite flimsy (remember the old chunky built-in disc drives? Like proper cd/dvd player drives) but this one has an extra feel of solidity about it. Plugged it in about ten minutes after it arrived (had to wait for the kettle to boil or it would have been sooner), the drive by itself isn't detected but as soon as a cd or dvd is inserted, it shows in the File Manager. I played a cd then a dvd using VLC media player, it was just as quick as my old failed drive when first reading the contents of a disc, but much quicker to respond to the "Play" command, and quicker at skipping through a disc while playing, be it a cd or dvd. Also i use the Linux K3b ripping programme, disc information was also read and displayed much more quickly than with my old drive. Other good points; I used the drive initially with the built-in short lead, holding the unit in my hand, because in the instructions (a tiny leaflet) it advises against connecting the USB lead to a slot on the front panel and to use one on the rear motherboard panel; and advises against using any kind of adaptor or extension lead. Well, as my computer tower unit is on the low shelf of my desk, and the lead built into this drive is short, I tried both a front USB slot and an extension lead. I was pleased to discover that it made no difference, so I can place the drive on my desk for ease of use. Also, there is no exposed ribbon cable to become trapped as in my old drive, as described above. So, I'm giving this disc drive five stars after using it for only about an hour minutes or so. I have no blank discs at the moment, so I will have to wait and see how this drive performs when burning. For a little over 20 quid, I am well pleased so far. EDIT; I have been playing some of my dvd's and some were not recognised by this drive, it was just making a quiet noise as it apparently scanned the disc repeatedly without success. The discs looked clean and unmarked, nevertheless I cleaned them and then they played perfectly. So this drive seems to be sensitive to the condition of your discs. This isn't a problem so i have not changed my rating.

Great Value [edited/addition]
First thing: The seller asked me to write this review. That said, I at least got down to testing the kit thoroughly, rather than discovering anything over a period of time that I didn't like, or it couldn't do. I was extremely impressed upon opening the box. I was aware it was a Chinese bit of 'cheap' kit, but I wasn't prepared to find the weighty and sturdy external drive within. I immediately thought about how 'cheap' should have been 'inexpensive.' My laptop only has two USB ports and they are on opposite sides. A bit of pain when faced with an external drive that requires TWO leads to be plugged in. In addition, I have a Type-C USB port that I have nothing plugged into - ever. This drive has a lead with a standard USB plug AND a Type-C plug attached - only ONE of which needs to be plugged in. Assuming it worked when it arrived, it already was going to be a handy bit of kit, if for that alone. Then examination and testing. The lead is tucked away underneath and to be plucked out to unravel and plugged into your port of choice. If you have a cluttered desk (as mine was at the time I first plugged it in), then the lead might feel a little short. It is in the region of 8"/20cm long - and if you feel it is too short, then clearing away any desk clutter is the answer! It was fine and better than too long when considering what it is supposed to be used as. Reading was fine. I pulled photos off a previously burned DVD and installed an old game off a manufactured DVD, without issue. Test burning was good - no trashed discs. Audio CD played fine in a couple of Hi-Fis, and data DVDs read fine on my Mac (written from my PC/Laptop). The only observation was that to write a data DVD I had to select a slower speed than offered - which is 'usually' the fault of the disc(s), but without having a selection of brands to play with, I couldn't say for certain. The fact is that the extra time taken allows the kettle to boil and is no big deal. I used the word 'cheap' at the start of this review and I was wrong - it should have been 'inexpensive' to which I really ought to have added: 'great value.' Sorry if long, but I rarely write reviews on stuff unless I have a point (and if it is good - great - if it is poor, it will have been sent back for a refund) - this is GREAT! EDIT/ADDITION After prolonged use, I have to say that my level of IMPRESSED has risen - despite me thinking I was up there already! With so many modern machines lacking optical drives, but archiving/backups etc. to DVD being a wise step, this device is not only desirable, but it is good to use.

Extremely Disappointed
Having just purchased a new HP laptop with Win10 pre-installed I needed to buy a CD/DVD drive, as like most laptops nowadays there was no inbuilt one. I chose this drive as it seemed to have one of the best set of reviews with 75% being five star. The drive was also described as 'plug and play', not needing any special 'driver' software. Having received the drive the first disappointment was the very short connecting lead which is completely impractical, fine if the drive can sit very close to the USB socket you plan to use and the lead comes from the side of the drive that faces it but otherwise difficult. The lead has a ''handy' storage slot in the base of the unit but in order to get the unit to sit flat on a surface it is necessary to bend the lead by 180 degrees which I think could cause a problem if it was done too many times. The drive seemed to be OK for playing DVDs but when I tried it on a CD or 'data disk' (typically supplied with software on for a printer or whatever) it was intermittent in operation. On a music CD it would play low number tracks but then started to skip higher ones. One particular prerecorded disc was not recognised at all. I then tried the drive on my old Win7 laptop but the outcome was the same. The user manual was a folded up slither of paper where much was in Chinese. There was a tiny note that said despite being a 'plug and play' device there was sometimes a need to install a driver for Win10, in which case contact Cocopa by email for the necessary link. I tried this and to date (several weeks) have had no reply. The unit was returned to Amazon for refund which all worked smoothly and I did not get charged for return postage etc. I then purchase a Dell drive at more than two times the price and so far everything has been fine, worked perfectly straight out of the box! POST SCRIPT - Shortly after submitting this review I was contacted by Cocopaa who apologised for the problem and said the delay in replying to my request for link information was due to Coronavirus problem in china, and the link was then provided, which of course was no longer of use. I was subsequently sent a further apology and an offer of a replacement unit or £25 gift card, both of which I declined.

Does exactly what its supposed to do!
I bough this product because i bought a mac which doesn't have its own disk drive. I originally bought this product just to burn a couple old cd's i had lying around onto my iTunes library, but now i've bought it i've found myself using it for playing dvd's and old games which is pretty cool. The product is nice and sleek so it'd be easy to pack in a bag for trips etc, Its also nice and lightweight. Its easy to use, simply just plug it in and pop whatever disk you want in! I also LOVE how the cable has a spot where it can tuck away into the base of the drive so that you wont loose it!! Honestly, its worth the money and its a great product for a great price! Highly recommend!

It's okay... but
The CD drive is okay if you're just wanting to watch DVDs and burn CDs to your computer (in my case Apple Mac). However, despite the positive stars I have given it, where the CD drive let me down was to burn my own CDs, from computer to disc. I kept getting error messages and then eventually trouble ejecting the disc from the drive. In the end, I sent it back. If all you want it for is to watch and play, then it's fine... however, if you're wanting to burn your own discs, like me (I know, so last century!) and you have an Apple Mac, then you're going to be disappointed.
