Saban's Power Rangers

Less cheesy than the original
If you watched the original show when you were a kid, This movie is not the same thing. The original monster of the week, over the top cheesefest the original show was is not what this movie is. It is still cheesy though, that much is not in question, but it's far more serious than the show ever got.It tackled some heavy issues the show never got into. The characters are interesting, but not very well fleshed out except Red, and Blue. Pink, Yellow, and Black don't get as much development. I am not going to fault the plot of this movie. They took a children's TV show from the 1990's and tried to make it more sophisticated, mature, and modernized, and I gotta tell you that's a very hard to pull off. And I personally think they did a rather decent job of it, given what they had to work with. The source material of Power Rangers is really over-the-top by design. For instance the Main bad guy is a sorceress named Rita Repulsa. She was Evil for the sake of being evil, and they didn't bother to give her much of a backstory because that wasn't really necessary. and In the show, she sent monsters to earth for the power rangers to fight. And that was the show. You see, a plot of a single episode of the original show can be explained in just a few sentences. Just Like the original Scooby Doo. And it worked, and it was successful and sold a bazillion toys.It took me a long time to get around to watching this, because I enjoyed the show, but I was right around the age where it got a little monotonous. And I stopped watching around the time the First Power rangers movie came out. Lord Zed had replaced Rita Repulsa by that point and it was the exact same thing every episode. And they managed to turn that into this movie. So if you're looking for a Power Rangers movie, That's what this definitely is. Is it good? Well...it's neat. And kinda cheesy. You can't take it as seriously as it would like to be taken. And that's really all there is to be said. But I thought it was cool. It also ended in a way that's pretty open and shut with just a tiny little bit of possibility of a sequel.

What the heck, why was this good?
So, for nostalgia's sake, I started watching this and was pretty shocked at the quality. I can tell the #1 reason it failed was because the plot was so incredibly cookie-cutter, and the characters were very thinly drawn. But, other than that, it's actually a pretty quality film! The CGI is on point, the world design and set work is great, and the soundtrack is actually kinda kick-ass.You can tell it was a much longer movie than what was on screen. It's already over 2 hours, but there are a couple points where they move through the action/plot real quick-like, as if they had to cut 20-40 mins from the original movie. I blame producers for that.Apparently, this was to be a 6-movie franchise before it flopped big time. I think it was actually ahead of it's time and falls into the same vein as Stranger Things (and even stars a Stranger Things actor). But, we'll never see a sequel since Saban re-sold PR to Hasbro after this failure, and I hear they're doing another reboot soon. Will be interested to see what comes of it....

Caution: May Cause A Nostalgia Overload That Will Make You Want To Wear Spandex Again
Attention all 90s kids! The Power Rangers have returned! If you grew up with the original series, the new Saban's Power Rangers movie will take you on a trip down memory lane faster than a Zord fight. I mean, who doesn't love a good Zord fight? The nostalgia factor is off the scale with all the classic catchphrases and cameos from the Pink Ranger and Green/White Ranger. I was half-expecting Balkan and Skull to show up munching on some popcorn in the back row. But it's not just for the old-school fans. This movie will take the uninitiated on a ride that's more exciting than a rollercoaster, and possibly even scarier for some since they might not have the walls of their bedrooms adorned with posters from the original series. It's morphin’ time, people!

Complex-Character Movie with some Wham Bam (not the other way around)
I stand before you admitting that I loved this movie. A kids’ movie; a power ranger movie for crying out loud, but I loved it. But it’s not your typical Power Rangers movie. It has $100M of special effects and deep, complex characters with emotional origination stories; stories, as in five, because the movie delves into how each of the five Power Rangers get there. We meet them as teenagers struggling with life and who they are, see them discover who they really are, watch them learn how to be a ranger, and then watch them kick ass. Even the battle with Rita that everyone came to see was emotional. The evolution from lost souls to heroes takes time so the movie is slow in that regard, but watching it happen was heartwarming and inspiring. I was left with such a happy feeling at the end. Oops, spoiler alert—but, you know, kid’s movie.I’m guessing that focusing on character is why the movie didn’t do as well as hoped. The people who want wham bam didn’t like that, and the people who would like it stayed away. But there were so many great lines and subtleties in the dialog. Perhaps not as deep as an Oscar winner, but pretty deep. The cinematography captured beautiful British Columbian scenery and many of the segues between scenes were brilliant. It is much, much more than a kiddie movie.RJ Cyler, as Bill Cranston (Blue Ranger), did such an amazing job acting. His portrayal as someone “on the spectrum,” someone mentally different, was on point. He created a character that the other four rangers fell in love with, as did I.I want to take a moment to mention Becky G’s portrayal of the Yellow Ranger. Trini was a shy, hide in the background, kind of person, so quiet that no one knew her name. Becky G did such a good job at this that the others overshadowed her. There were many shots (and a photo of the team even) where her face was blocked. On one hand I felt so badly for her. Amazon doesn't even listed her in the starring role line. On the other hand, it is proof of how good a job she did. She’s a beautiful person in real life and was hidden in frumpy clothes and a quiet, unassertive role, but I thought Trini held her own and was clearly a critical member of the team. That took real acting. It makes me sad they didn’t include her signing in the soundtrack (Becky G’s not Trini’s).Even though the Red Ranger (Dacre Montgomery) is the designated leader (i.e., decreed, not earned) and is, of course, the high school quarterback star with six pack abs, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger stood out in showing how women lead too, strong and decisive. Perhaps a statement on gender roles, but what was really going on is that the five of them did not see gender. Or color. There is a line in the movie where Alpha 5, the ranger’s robotic assistant, says, “Different colors, different kids, different colored kids!” European, Asian, African, Indian, and Hispanic, boys and girls, were represented on a team of five. The robot, stuck in ancient thinking, pointed it out, but the team just saw people and acted accordingly. They responded to character, not categories. Martin Luther King would be proud. It was a refreshing look at how it should be.And oh yeah, the special effects were A May Zing. The $100M budget out did themselves. All of it seemed so real I kept finding myself forgetting that it wasn’t real.At the end of the movie, Red Ranger’s father puts a news article on his refrigerator next to his delinquent son’s football accomplishments. The reasons are profound. You can’t really read the article about the Power Rangers showing up in the few seconds it’s in frame but pause the movie and read it. So much detail for two seconds worth and it describes the world’s reaction to what it thinks are extraterrestrials showing up. Too weird, right?Like I said, too deep for a kid’s movie. I’m not going to admit how many times I’ve watched it, but everyone should at least once.

Mighty Meh-phin Power whatever.
While some of the characters growing to like each other and training to become able to morph was good. Far too much time was spent watching that over getting to the actual morphing and fighting.I would much rather they had stuck closer to the original series and just gave them the ability to morph straight away and let more fight sequences happen before the end battle and the big bad.A shame as Power Rangers was amazing, growing up.A sequel if it happens may be better but it's nowhere near the best re-introduction to the rangers on the big screen.

all angelic plastic hero/heroine American wholesome teens live win the day again!
My son adores it, so it is absolutely great and good value; mind you if you are the grown-up ( NOT perhaps the target audience) who has to listen to it over, and over and over again it can begin to lose some of its charm. It earns its 5-stars in the opinion of my son, and nothing more is needed

Parental guidance
Revamp of the original power rangers, the film does start in a way that might scare younger viewers so parental guidance will be a good idea, in typical rangers style a great fun film in the end. Watch out for one or two jokes for the adults.
