Question 1

In the picture it shows a metal shield on the neck of the handel - does it come with that?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all Gransfors splitting mauls and axes come with a metal shield on the neck of the handle. Thank you

Question 2

Can anyone compare this to the Fiskars X27 Splitting axe? To me it's the ULTIMATE axe of all times. Cuts through everything. Thanks.

Accepted Answer

If you ever use one you will never go back the only thing is they could put a longer collar guard just for over strikes. I have never used a fiskars but I know when you hold one of these in your hand you know it is made by hand by somebody that take's pride in their work. I have split about 25 cords and just sharped 3 times. It holds a great edge. I know it's a bit pricey but I think you get what you pay for here.

Question 3

Is there a link to a replacement handle for this axe?

Accepted Answer

I wish that Amazon STILL let us comment to each other as customers. That was such a wonderful social aspect of this site. Where customers could REALLY help one another!

Anyways, moving on, I am SO curious why you need a handle replacement?

B/c I've owned this tool & I've accidentally hit the neck of the handle, right below the maul head, on the edge of logs, on the edge of "wedges" I've used.. & it's held up really good b/c of that metal guard around the neck.

So if you've read this far. Thanks. There is no link to a replacement handle that I know of.

YOUR BEST BET, in this particular case, would to be search locally.. & see if you can find yourself a good handle.

I know you could ALSO go to their website though & contact them, through email, explain your situation, and they could probably guide you in the right direction?

Gransfors Bruk, has both a English website & Swedish website, so you'd have to hit the right one.

Good luck with endeavors!

Question 4

how well does it work on hardwoods (oad, hickory, etc.)?

Accepted Answer

It worked great on cherry. I haven't tried it on the other woods yet.
