Syracuse: A Sentimental Dictionary of a City

and yet easy to dip in and out of
An astounding book. You can tell the author loves the Sicilian city of Syracuse. It's evocative, detailed, compelling, and yet easy to dip in and out of. If you are visiting Syracuse I would strongly recommend you read this book before you go. There are so many layers to the history of the area - so much you can miss - and this provides a much better narrative of what you can see and discover than any of the brief summaries you can find in other guide books. It even has an index at the back covering the major sites and buildings you can discover so you can go back to remind yourself which part of the city's story you are in. And it does it with passion! And Syracuse itself is well worth an extended visit, particularly for anyone interested in history, archaeology, culture...
