I think it's if you get a single color you get one roll of 100 yards, but if you get the assorted pack you get 25 rolls of 11 yards.

Can you do a cross stich with this? I need larger than typical for adding names to Christmas stockings

It would be much to large, you usually need embroidary thread for cross stitch
