is a9 better than a7riii?

Not better just more pixels. You have to ask how many pixels do you need to be happy with your results?

Why does the free grip cost an extra $350?

You can order one that has plastic parts from Meiki (good products with remote control). They are about 100.00 OR you can order a grip extension for the same price from Sony. The Meike holds two standard A9 batteries and also has a remote.

Any future plans by sony to update a9's firmware to accomodate s-log 1 or 2 ?. jack .j.

NO CLUE. Keep checking for updates is the best answer or talk to a Sony Rep

Is / will sony contemplating updating the firmware of the a9 to accommodate the s-log 2 in the future ? . j.j.

No one on here will know for sure. You'll have to wait for Sony to announce something.
