The Godfather Part II

Surprised the hubs with a digital copy of one of our favorite movies. I purchased multiple movies, he is so happy.I love The Godfather II more than I because of the entire deep dive into the backgrounds of The Godfather.

After finishing Robert De Niro's new biography, I had great impetus to re-view done of his films. Godfather Part II was offered to De Niro to play Vito Corleone.a superb performance, all spoken in a soft Sicilian tone. He won tgecAcademy Award for this performance.However, the performance by Al Pacino as Vito 's son, Michael, is mesmerizing. Why he did not win an award for this performance I have no idea. The story of Godfather Part II is about the opening chapters in Don Vito’s life. His family is killed by a Mafia don in Sicily, he comes to America at early age, he grows up , and moves into a career of crime.The story, of Don Vito’s younger days is but a small part if this film. The director, Coppola, devotes the rest to Michael Corleone, who has taken over the family’s business after his father’s death. He has consolidated operations in Nevada, and wants to expand in Florida and Cuba. Michael is played, again and brilliantly, by Al Pacino. Robert Duvall, plays Tom Hagen, the family’s lawyer; Diane Keaton as Michael’s wife Kay; and John Cazale as the weak older brother Fredo. These are such superb performances in all aspects. The music sweeps us up, and who could forget the music. Whenever you hear those opening chords, the Godfather comes to mind. A brilliant, brilliant film. It has always been Michael's story. Regardless of his family's wishes he enlists in the war. But, his entire life transforms when he stands up to the men who attempted to kill his beloved family. Clearly, in the beginning of the saga he did not want to be part of the mafia. As he goes on in his vendetta of his enemies there is a mesmerizing moment and look to him that says he's got this, and he likes it. To have such a insane loyalty to kill your own brother --- that is the pull of unending power. One of my top 5 fav movies.

It might be hard to believe that a sequel to The Godfather could surpass its progenitor, but Part II does. As the great film critic Pauline Kael wrote, the sequel both widens and deepens the original story, and it punishes audiences for growing so comfortable with the fundamentally monstrous deeds of the primary characters. To be fair, Part II is not a standard sequel; it's really a seamless extension, in opposite temporal directions, of the original story, combining both movies into one epic history of a particularly violent American family. And actually, it's more than an epic - it's a screen opera. It begins in Sicily right at the turn of the 20th century, where young Vito Corleone's father and older brother have been murdered by Don Ciccio, the local warlord. It then follows Vito to America, where he grows to young manhood, and it depicts his transformation from quiet family man to avenger and then to Godfather. At the same time, the story follows Michael Corleone's struggle to maintain control over his family despite an assassination attempt and a dangerous rivalry with Jewish mobster Hyman Roth (played by the legendary acting teacher Lee Strasberg). Sequel or not, this is one of the truly great American movies. It stands after nearly 40 years as Coppola's masterpiece, a savage portrait of a family gone horribly wrong. In fact, it's so skillful that the final scene, which contains no violence, is probably the most shocking of all, because it confronts the audience with the magnitude of the tragic journey the Corleones have undertaken in less than two decades. [Technical note: This was the last movie ever to be shot in the classic Technicolor process, and although its colors are subdued, they are unfaded by time. Fantastic movie. Great acting. Incredible scenes. Love it when they show parts of Italy & Sicily. Wish they made more of these. They definitely found the perfect actors to play the parts. Highly recommend this movie.
