Broan-NuTone 433 Automatic Aluminum Shutter for 353 and 35316 Gable Mount Attic Ventilator, 16.75" x 2.75" x 16.75"

I purchased the Broan 433 to replace a plastic shutter installed many years ago. The swivels for the louvers of the plastic shutter had worn quite a bit and when the fan was running caused a loud rattling noise that permeated my small house. The Broan 433 is easy to install, outperforms the plastic shutter with regard to the amount of open area for the airflow, and has eliminated the noise associated with the plastic shutter. Because the louvers of the Broan 433 are lighter and require less force to open them, I am confident that it will be a long time before the swivels wear out as did those of the plastic louvers.I highly recommend the Broan 433 based on quality construction, ease of installation, and performance.

My 8 year old house was built using a plastic louver vents at the gable ends. I live in sunny Florida so its important to provide thermostatically controlled fan power ventilation. The plastic louvers fell apart and I needed an upgraded replacement. The Broan 433 are close to the opening size. I received the shipment today and am very happy with the aluminum louver. The blades operate independently and smoothly. The units appear to be well constructed. I'll install the louvers this weekend and expect that these will provide superior service to the original plastic units and I doubt that I'll have to tackle this job again.

I purchased this shutter along with the Broan 353 Gable Mount fan for installation in my garage. The temperature in my garage has been in excess of 100 degrees after my wife and I get home in the afternoon - two hot engines emitting heat inside the garage. And my neighbor has an attic fan in his garage, which he highly recommended. So the install of the fan and shutter were fairly easy, other than having to cut through a one inch depth of stucco. The shutter is very nice, other than what some of the other reviews indicated - they don't automatically close all the way, right away. It took a breeze to push them closed all the way. So I glued some one inch washers inside of each of the louvers, which was suggested in other reviews, and it works quite well. So other than having to manipulate them to close all the way consistently, I really like this shutter. Additionally, my neighbor recommend using Loctite Construction adhesive instead of screws/nails, due to my stucco application concern. Loctite worked great! I also used it to frame the shutters with some redwood that I painted white. I love the appearance of the shutter, and would recommend it.

shutter is light and made well.works perfect for what i needed.but........the measurements cant be found for this thing on the site.the outer was like 19 and a half. the inner was 16 and a half.was expecting it to be bigger.i was useing it for and exhaust fan in my garage which was twenty four by twenty four.but it worked out fine.now with that said.most people are buying this for an attic fan which i also have.they are smaller. i got mine at lowes.this vent will work perfect for those.hope this helps.because i was in limbo trying to find the size cause it aint there.so here it is .outer dimesion is 19 1/2 by191/2 and the inner or the part that will go in the hole that your going to cut is 16 1/2 by 16 1/2.hope this helps every one.

The unit is very well built and arrived with no damage. The corners are reinforced and the edges have foam gaskets to insure a tight seal when closed. The shutters work flawlessly and open and close with no hesitation. It takes very little airflow to open the shutters fully and they close once the fan has shut off. I was initially going to buy the plastic shutter but the unit faces full sun for most of the day and I was concerned how long it would last. The Broan is certainly built for the weather and should last many years with little maintenance.

About 1000 times better than the plastic ones; seems to seal pretty tight; quiet, doesn't make any slapping noise; louvers move very easily, no binding or dragging anywhere. Metal outer frame is strong enough but can be easily drilled if you want a few more screw holes for attaching. Haven't found anything not to like so far. Working great.

As mentioned in other reviews, this is rather flimsy aluminum.- I welded the miter corners which helped with it's structural integrity. Low temp aluminum brazing rods and a propane torch would also work.- Like another reviewer I epoxied washers onto the inside of the louvres as they are otherwise far too light and flap around.- And again like the other reviewer, I added a screen using aluminum window screening on the inside and secured it using foil tape.- I also added more weatherstripping. There is already some weatherstripping to seal each louvre, it might even work if the louvres were thicker and better formed but they are so flimsy and incorrectly shaped that they don't make good contact with the existing weatherstripping.A bigger problem is that the instructions really need to be very loosely followed. They have you frame out a square using 2x4s of 19-3/4" inside dimensions. Then from the inside drill holes in each corner of this thru to the outside. The intent is to use these holes to draw a 19-3/4" sized cut line on the outside of the structure. Then they have you frame out a second square using 2x4s, this time of 19-3/4" outside dimensions (with the intention that it fits inside the previous). Then they have you cut through the siding and sheathing exposing this inner square frame. This is really idiotic as you are removing more of the inner sheathing than is necessary.Instead only create the second square of 19-3/4" outside width/height. Drill though the inside corners of this to create your cut line. From the outside cut through the siding and sheathing along this cut line. Insert the shutter into the opening and mark around the outside of the shutter lip a new cut line. Along this cut line remove just the siding exposing enough of the inside sheathing for the lip of the shutter to sit flat against. Screw and caulk as per instructions.

Lightweight and durable. Slightly loud depending on how much air flow is going through it. Much larger than anticipated!

I specifically chose this product over a number of other options because it claimed to be quite resistant to weather. While decently made, the reality is that it will not keep out raining falling toward it at an angle.

Not the quality I expected so I sent it back. It was bent on the corners upon receiving it, the edges were not flush or there were big gaps like other reviewers mentioned and the vents didn’t fully close all the time.
