This book truly is a bit disappointing. The writer seems to be slightly obsessed with the historical context and meaning of the novel. The sections on themes and characters is very poor, with a large amount of vague and completely irrelevant information. What little useful points are made are nearly always unsupported by quotation. Many key themes, such as 'Innocence' and 'Injustice' (the two most recent examined themes) are entirely missed out; while ridiculous and irrelevant themes, such as 'Superstitions', are heavily detailed. It just doesn't make any sense. The character section again gives very little useful points. If you want this book because you are tremendously bored and would like a mildly interesting read to get some background information on the text, then by all means buy it.However if, like me, you wanted a 'revision guide' type thing to help you to achieve some sort of reasonable grade at GCSE, then DEFINITELY don't.It's too late for me now, save yourselves...

Excellent. Great advice on improving essays for the GCSE exam.

I bought this guide just in time for GCSE, and what a find: clear chapters on the plot, plus in depth analysis that I am hoping will give my son's essays the edge in the exam. This has many more pages than other study guides and you feel that it is written to help you get a top grade, rather than just a pass. Great that this is part of a series - I am going to buy the one on An Inspector Calls which my son is also studying.
