Once the Mustang started escorting the bombers, the roles were reversed and the Germans quickly saw themselves as the vulnerable ones as their fighters lacked the speed and altitude the Mustang had gained in their updates and were easily picked apart and down giving the Allies significant air superiority. Over the course of the war, the Mustang assumed many roles as far as air-to-combat to destroying enemy transports, the Mustang racked up over 10,000 airplanes destroyed in the air and on the ground and stood as one, if not the best, aircraft fighter to take to the skies and dominate to help change the outcome of WWII.
