Hercules

For the moment, this is the best ever version of the Steve Reeves classic. Widescreen, 2.35.1-taken off the original negative. And yes, it does have an English language track. Interesting enough, the final reel (where Jason and friends wakeup on the Argo, after a night of partying with the Amazons), the audio switches to the English track that Joesph E. Levine made for the American release-a fact not noticed by the various fanboy sites and magaines out there!

Considering it was made in 1958 this is incredible. Probably still the best herc film there is.

Hercules arrives in the ancient Greek kingdom of Iolcus to tutor Iphitus, son of king Pelias; immediately on arrival, he falls in love with the king's daughter Iole. Before he can win her, he must succeed in a series of quests, in the course of which he teams up with Jason, true heir of Iolcus, whom he accompanies on the famous voyage of the Argonauts. This was the film that launched both the career of Steve Reeves and the popularity of the Sword and Sandal genre. After the success of this film countless amounts of strongman movies followed featuring characters such as Mascite, Samson, Goliath and of course Hercules. Steve Reeves is great as Hercules and the best actor to ever play him, I wish that he starred in more than just one Hercules sequel. There is good support from Fabrizio Miono as Jason, Arturo Dominici as the traitorous assassin Eurysteus and Mimmo Palmara as the jealous Iphitus. There are some good action sequences where Hercules take on a Lion (which is the best man Vs Lion fight to ever feature in a S&S movie) and the famous Cretan Bull which both take place in the first 45 minutes. Then in the last half an hour we have two good skirmishes as the Argonauts take on a band of Ape men and King Pelias's soldiers in the court room where Hercules swipes the floor with Pelias's Soldiers with two large chains. In my opinion the film only falters when the Argonaut arrive on the island of the Amazon women and it slowly begins to become a little boring, but that takes place for only around 15 minutes but it does seem a lot longer. A must see for Sword and Sandal films! THIS DVD IS IN FULL SCREEN FORMAT (4:3) AND THE QUALITY IS THAT OF A VHS, but it is still watchable and not really bad quality but I'd rather buy the Hercules DVD that also comes with the Mark Forest movie Mole Men against the son of Hercules as that version is better quality and is in widescreen format.

This is a very good film.

Was looking forward to going back in time watching Hercules,but the film stopped 15 mins from the end.It maybe the copy or my dvd machine is to sensitive????

I love the older movies because they are watchable for the whole family without all this violence of todays TV

Used to watch all Steve Reeves movies at the pictures when I was younger with friends,still enjoyed this on dvd brought back memories.

Great fun - it launched Steve Reeves film career in the 1950's. From them on, endlessly copied by other Italian film companies. But this original takes some beating ! Just a pity the copy is only in 3;4 ratio - would look so much better in 16:9 Scope - because of this, not the sharpest image - but it's a good souvenir - and it's SO cheap !!

DVD of an old film, it played in my DVD player without an issue and was a great purchase.

Ausgezeichnet in Story und Schauspielerensemble und vor allem sehr unterhaltsamer Monumentalfilm! Zwar in der Tricktechnik noch nicht so perfekt aber mit Charme.
