Best description of Lean!

Perhaps the best derivation and description of "Lean" I have ever read! A must-read for operations leaders and Continuous Improvement / OpEx / Lean Practitioners.

Great book, need Kindle version for USA

I gave it a 4 star just because there are no Kindle options for the USA.I'm usually not a fan of story examples in books like this, but this one uses great stories that really help you understand the principles. Very well organized and easy to understand.

Flow Efficiency is the Copernicus of today

I'm giving this book 5 stars even though I really want to give it 4.5. There are a few things in this book that I feel as slightly off. That said, this is a great good that helps explain the "why" of what people like myself do for a living (organizational change). It does a good job of describing concepts that are actually fairly complex. The thing that I think most miss, is that this (LEAN) is far more than process improvement. This book points out a few interesting subtleties that are often missed. These are generally associated with vision, goals and the why's. For instance a company may want to achieve higher customer satisfaction. Often that is their goal. They try and miss and don't know why. The book suggests that LEAN should be the destination and that higher customer service (as an example) is a side effect of becoming a LEAN organization. This is true. The sutler point is that organizations need to shift how they think about approaching change. I think the book just barely touches on that and I wish it did more in that regard.Because we are often process and outcome focused, organizations often miss huge opportunities. I love what I do because I help organizations learn how to focus on those things that are really important and not the shiny things all around that are easy to go after yet net little long term results.I recommend that leaders of organizations that feel that they often struggle or can't seem to meet market demands, read this book....as a start. It also makes a great book club book for conversation starters.

This is Lean indeed :)

The book really hits the bulls eye in why some implementations of lean fails. They are trying to shoehorn some one else’s methods instead of thinking what is a goad method to think lean in their own organization.

Slow start, but great end

I am very familiar with Goldratt's Theory of Constraints, as conveyed in The Goal.I thought the early discussion of flow efficiency versus resource efficiency and bottlenecks, oversimplified and perhaps slightly misrepresented TOC.However, later discussion contextualized and clarified so much of how to understand Lean and the TPS that I am forced to give it five stars. This book teaches you some of the concepts of Lean, but much more importantly teaches how you can understand other works about Lean.I'm definitely rereading this book.

Meta level book about lean

This is not a book about how to become lean and definitely not about lean tools and methods. This is lean only describes lean in a higher level and also some important concept that one has to understand to understand lean.Don't read this to become able develop a lean organization. Read this book as your first book about lean to understand how you should begin your learning process.

mission accomplished

The authors set out to clarify lean and now I am perfectly equipped to differentiate and observe different contexts in a way I wasn't before despite having read a few Lean books. Liker's Toyota Kata book makes more sense to me - now I can see how the Katas fit the mindset of Lean and are a strategy for a Lean organization seeking improvement...Thanks for providing so many useful metaphors too - a truly great read and a nice digestible length!

ONE OF THE BEST BOOK ON LEAN

Excellent book. I mainly appreciate the relation between "Flow Efficiency" and the 'Ressource Efficiency", which is the Efficiency Matrix" (chap 8). There is a theoretical regard on the "Efficiency Frontier" that a company can operate. This aspect needs further detail since I cannot see a practical use of it.

love this piece of clarity about lean

It’s so true that the mental models floating around to explain the term „lean“ have all been served as lists of 5 or 9 or 3 + 7 things to remember. This fine book instead offers a model more resembling a tree-structure putting „flow-efficiency“ at the root-node.It allows for an understanding that I now finally hope to hold in memory and start applying.Curious to see how my understanding of lean will evolve in the future and how this tree-structure will then stand the test of time.
