Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations by the Finite Element Method (Dover Books on Mathematics)

This book packs a lot of information into a very slim package. There are good figures for those who haven't seen how the elements are actually constructed before, and the explanations are very clear. I found myself referencing this book a lot during my Finite Elements course, and it often provided the most clarity on a topic amongst the textbooks I referenced and my class notes. It was great for me as a student just beginning with finite elements, and it's so dense with information that it will continue to be of value as a quick reference later on. All I have to say is that there's a reason this is a Dover book -- for $13, this is a definite must-have.

Excellent text for solving PDEs using FEM. Simple and concise explanation of methods but requires knowledge of advanced mathematics and finite element meshing. Green's theorem and closed volume and surface integral relationships.

Its a good introduction to FEM, not too heavy and not too light, the book is relatively thin if you compare it to the rest of the books on the subject, meaning that the information is condensed, it helps having a good instructor. This book to me was the best when I needed to refresh my memory or when I needed information fast, the book covers examples up to 3 dimensions, but through out the book, it only covers the mathematical side of things , it doesnt have any computer code examples in it, which is a shame, however considering its price and the clearly written material I would definitely recommend it to any grad students looking to learn about FEM.

I really like this book. When I forget how things work in the world of FEM I pick this up to remind myself.Johnson goes through the "basics" of what FEM is, why it works, how you formulate, etc.I'm not sure the book is great for someone just learning FEM since it is fairly concise (which is what I like) but I love that it covers the basics and general solver methods, etc.

I bought this book for my phd course. Although the book is written on a pure mathematical way (and I'm not an mathematician) I did understand almost everything. Nevertheless, before starting to read this you should have in your mind that you NEED to have some basic of advanced mathematics.I would recommend this book to engineers who are starting to use FEM analysis, and graduate students who are learning the basics of FEM.

It is very good introduction for FEM. Some people said it is easy, but when you go through the book, it helps you think deeper about mathematics and the proof behind FEM.

Excellent book on the FEM!

First I rate this at 2.5 stars, however there is no option available for that.This books suffers as does any pure mathematical books on a topic that has wide applications to applied problemsfrom an almost complete lack of complete examples and real world applications that give actual numerical results, thus you can not compare your code to any sample problem that he "touches" on. If learning FEM for the first time this is notthe book to purchase. In addition to the above there is no sample code.However, those that are already versed in the subject of FEM will find the book very useful as there are some nice theoretical discussions and extensions of topics that are normally just touched on in introductory texts on the subject. For those already comfortable with the subject and searching for an advanced discussion of the FEM this book would rate 4 stars.There apparently is no web support or downloaded able files even at the author's website. There are other issues with the text as well. The book seems to be specifically written for students at a particular institution that have gone through a particular program.
