Q: Would this lens be stupid to purchase if I own a canon T6?

This is now one of my favorite lenses! I have a 5d mark iii and previously had a t2i. I'd use it on either in a heartbeat. And I'd guess it will make you love your t6 a pinch more. I seriously love this lens. An excellent investment in my opinion.

Q: Would this lens be a waste on a crop body? I have a 7D.

It's a fantastic lens and noticably sharper than the Mk I (see recent dpreview comparison) but the crop factor means that if you ever upgrade to full frame your lenses will appear to change. 35mm looks like 55mm on a crop camera. I got this because I loved the look of my 24mm on my 20D and I have a 5D Mk II now. I like how wide the 24mm is but now I have a not so dramatic wide. I don't think resolution is the biggest deciding factor. Longitudinal CA (the green or pink fringes on OOF areas ) is the biggest negative of the Mk I, but the overall look is still attractive. Look at photos of 35mm on crop camera and see if you like what you're getting. See if you like 35mm on a full frame. See if you'd prefer 24mm or 50mm. Buying the 35mm Mk I would not be a mistake if you like the look (the Mk I is still a great lens, almost half the price and much smaller) Good lenses are an investment that keep a lot of their value. It's not necessarily a waste, but your choice is not clear.
