can this mouse double as a desk pad for smooth writing?

The mouse pad has a thin foam material in between and i dont think it would be suitable to for writing purposes

Is it good for gaming?

Yes, depending on your play style it can be suited for gaming. I tend not to drag my mouse as far because I adjusted my DPI settings that way. I play FPS games and haven't had any issues with it so far. There is more than enough room for larger mouse movements
